Mapping Waste Hotspots to Guide Investments in East Africa.

The World Bank used Litterati’s data to address the systemic problem of mismanaged waste in several cities in East Africa.. By mapping litter, mismanaged waste hotspots and estimating the volume and weight of these materials, the project provided crucial insights that guided strategic decisions on collection services, infrastructure placement, and resource allocation—ensuring targeted investment where it was needed most.

Additionally, the project offered city-by-city comparisons among Dar es Salaam, Tanga, Bagamoyo, and Mtwara, deepening understanding of regional waste challenges.

Building on this success, the partnership has expanded to similar initiatives in Kenya and Mozambique, enabling the World Bank to drive data-informed waste infrastructure improvements across East Africa.
